Liberia Launches Community Wi‑Fi in Bong and Nimba Counties

by Abu S Kamara

In a major step toward bridging the digital divide, Liberia’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, in partnership with CSquared, officially launched new community Wi‑Fi networks in Bong and Nimba counties on May 19, 2025. The initiative is part of a nationwide push to improve internet access and promote digital inclusion across the country.

The launch represents a significant milestone in the government’s broader plan to expand connectivity beyond Monrovia and into rural and underserved communities. By providing reliable and affordable internet in these areas, the project aims to empower residents with access to online education, information, and economic opportunities.

Speaking at the launch, officials from the Ministry emphasized that digital access is no longer a luxury but a necessity. “Connectivity opens doors,” one official stated, “especially for young people who are eager to learn, innovate, and compete in a global economy.”

CSquared, a broadband infrastructure company backed by Google and other partners, is helping to power this rollout with high-speed fiber-optic networks. Their technology is expected to deliver faster, more stable internet that can support schools, small businesses, and community centers in the region.

Local residents have welcomed the development, noting that internet access can now help farmers check market prices, students do research, and entrepreneurs grow their businesses online. For many, this marks the first time their communities have had consistent public internet access.

As Liberia works to strengthen its digital future, the launch of community Wi‑Fi in Bong and Nimba is a clear signal that the country is moving toward a more connected and inclusive society—one where no region is left behind.
