Jack Dorsey Introduces Bitchat – A Messaging App That Works Without Internet

by Abu S Kamara

Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block, has launched a groundbreaking messaging app called Bitchat that allows users to communicate without the need for internet or cellular service. Developed over a weekend as an experimental project, Bitchat has already gained massive attention after its iOS beta version quickly reached its user limit.

Bitchat uses Bluetooth mesh networking to send messages across nearby devices, even when they’re not directly connected. Each message is encrypted and can be relayed through multiple devices until it reaches its intended recipient. This means users can send and receive messages within a range of about 300 meters without relying on mobile data or WiFi. Plans are also in place to add WiFi Direct for even broader connectivity.

The app prioritizes privacy and decentralization. Users don’t need a phone number, email, or account to sign up. All data remains on the user’s device, and features include private rooms, password protection, and a panic mode that lets users instantly erase all data. Even the message timing is randomized to prevent tracking.

Bitchat is not designed to replace mainstream apps like WhatsApp or Signal but instead offers a unique solution for off-grid communication. It’s ideal for emergency situations, large events, or regions with unreliable connectivity. As the app develops, it could become a crucial tool for secure communication in critical moments.

By releasing Bitchat, Jack Dorsey is once again pushing the boundaries of how people connect, offering a glimpse into the future of decentralized, resilient communication technology.
